Chapter 0

the-library-knowledge-kills is a live action experiment in alternative reality game design, which 'will' be designed by librarians at the LITA National Forum in Denver this October 5-7

Alternative reality games are games which take place on computers, on the web, in video, print and audio and in the real world. These games are examples of collective intelligence and distributed narratives and are similar to one of the earliest internet-based games, The Internet Hunt by Rick Gates.

Your game master will be Thom Gillespie, the director of the MIME program at Indiana University. Mime has always been about interactive storytelling and computer game design. www.mime.indiana.edu

The goal of this experiment is that librarians understand the essentials of game design by playing the-library-knowledge-kills game into existence. The hope is that is that librarians will take these essentials back to their libraries to make their libraries centers of game design ranging from simple web-based games to complete alternative reality games developed in their libraries for their communities.

If you are playful and interested in the most powerful medium of the 21st century I'd love to see you in the sanbox. Check this site for continuing information.
